Abstract:  In the fall of communism in 1989, Romanian monasticism was, paradoxically, in a relatively prosperous situation, gathered around a few great spiritual fathers who survived persecution and were visited each year by hundreds of thousands of believers. The leading place was held by two large figures of famous "staretz" from Sihăstria Monastery, Paisie Olaru (1897 - 1990), a true "Romanian Seraphim of Sarov " and Ilie Cleopa (1912 - 1998) "a true Abba Pimen and uncrowned patriarch of Romanian monasticism" as the famous theologian Ioan I. lcă jr. from Sibiu calls him. These great spiritual fathers along with other "staretz" like Arsenie Papacioc and Teofil Părăianu have determined, both during communism and after, tens and hundreds of vocations for monastic life and oriented new destinies into the spiritual ascent. Along with these great advisers, we mention a few other younger priests who, since 1989, have influenced spiritual life in Romania, such as fathers Rafael Noica and Ioan Cojanu, al of them evoked in these pages.
